Oh great wish-granting genie in the sky….

I’ve been seeing and hearing a lot of things about lately about like prayer and faith and God and Jesus, and it’s really annoying. I have nothing against God, per se; Jesus and I sometimes get drunk together. But what really annoys me is when people’s whole concept of the divine is basically as a big wish-granter in the sky. Like I put on CBN, and Pat Robertson is there, praying away, rubbing on the giant magic lamp of the Lord. And he’s not the only one. This seems to be an extremely popular concept of how religion works. Tit for tat.

Where and when did people’s concept of religious worship and devotion turn into whimpering and begging for the Almighty to change something on this earth or in their life? God doesn’t have time for this shit. He’s too busy at the strip clubs and the pool halls. Jesus doesn’t like it when you’re weak and spineless and you refuse to even try to solve your own problems.

Ultimately, the whole thing seems to boil down to a religious transaction. You agree to put so many credits worth of “worship” into the divine bank, and in return, you get to withdraw a certain amount of magical favors. Which I think is just bullshit. If you want to be into God and all that, go for it. Go nuts. Have a great time. I recommend it, in fact. But don’t do it because you expect to be rewarded for sniveling before His throne.

[This is a reposted version of this, because Blogger seems to have eaten the original. I think there were some comments which were lost. Oh well.]
