Jack Chick Interview

I just came across a really good article about Christian Fundamentalist Comic Book artist, Jack Chick (he’s the guy behind those little tiny comic books about God you find in the laundromat). It’s written by a fellow named Jimmy Aikin who is a writer for a Catholic publication (Chick is vehemently anti-Catholic). Aikin was invited to the premiere of Jack Chick’s feature-length movie, The Light of the World.

In this article, Aikin talks about how more or less accidentally met Chick, who is an extraordinary recluse, who refuses to give interviews or allow his photo to be taken, for fear of being assassinated. Aikin relays a conversation that he had with the master-mind of fundamentalist hatred and paranoia. Evidently, Chick believed that Aikin was a Jesuit agent sent from the Vatican for sinister purposes.

It’s a really interesting piece of writing, and Aikin also has provided a picture of Jack Chick which he drew from memory. Well worth checking out if you’re interested in Chick’s work at all.

  1. Clips from the movie are available on Chick’s site
  2. I also did a short post on the movie when it came out.
  3. For more background about Chick and some of the controversy surrounding his career, Wikipedia has an entry on him.
