Meaning of “psychedelic”
I knew from reading Jung and other stuff that “psyche” comes from the Greek word for soul. He seems to have favored that term over “mind” I think because it’s more inclusive, and because of its connotative links to the idea of a person’s soul. Anyway, right, so psychology is the study of this field. But I never thought to look up what “psychedelic” means. Obviously, it shares the root of “psyche,” and it turns out that “delic” comes from a Greek verb that means “to make visible”.
So, “psychedelic” actually means roughly “to make visible the soul” which is just totally damn cool. I guess this relates to one of the more popular definitions of a psychedelic as causing sensory hallucinations - wherein you experience the reality of the soul/mind as though it were a visible thing. Good stuff.
