Just when you thought it was safe to go back in the water… Attorney General John Ashcroft has made a statement about how federal judges interpreting the law (which is why we even HAVE judges) threaten our “national security” by questioning, and in some cases overturning decisions Bush has made.

In his first remarks since his resignation was announced Tuesday, Ashcroft forcefully denounced what he called “a profoundly disturbing trend” among some judges to interfere in the president’s constitutional authority to make decisions during war.

“The danger I see here is that intrusive judicial oversight and second-guessing of presidential determinations in these critical areas can put at risk the very security of our nation in a time of war,” Ashcroft said in a speech to the Federalist Society, a conservative lawyers’ group.

I mean, which is just so obviously bullshit. Now that he’s resigned, I guess they are gonna just let him say and do whatever he wants (not that he wasn’t already) until his successor is placed.

Oh, and he also said the following, which really underscores how full of bullshit he is:

“Courts are not equipped to execute the law. They are not accountable to the people,” Ashcroft said.

Wait, courts aren’t equipped to execute the law? Could this be because they are part of the judiciary branch, and NOT part of the executive branch? Courts don’t execute laws, courts interpret laws, and they interpret the acts of the other branches of government according to those laws. And of course courts are not accountable to the people. THEY ARE ACCOUNTABLE TO THE FUCKING LAW! The whole fucking reason we have a three branch government and the system of checks and balances is so that the government doesn’t get too carried away with itself (too late!). And it doesn’t matter if we’re “at war” or not - especially since, from this point forward, we’re likely to be at war forever.
