Israel Visited by Plague of Locusts

Israel is currently experiencing the worst infestation of locusts in almost 50 years. Here’s a photo of a locust swarm. They seem to have flown in from North Africa, and in certain areas are devouring all the plantlife they can find. Rather than have it ruin their day though, some Israelis are making the most of it by collecting and eating the locusts. Evidently locusts are the only insect which are actually acceptable to eat according to Kosher dietary restrictions. (American settlers seemed to have made use of them as well.) They are actually considered a delicacy. Some people even eat them raw, plucking them right off the ground. Apparently, you have to cook the locusts while they are still alive, or else they become bitter.

Oh, also, there’s mention in the Bible of how John the Baptist’s diet consisted of locusts and wild honey (Matthew 3:4).
