Connections between Philip K. Dick & John Lennon
Based on that previous post about John Lennon seeing aliens, I started looking around for connections between him and Philip K Dick, who also had a mystical/alien experience of some kind around rougly the same time. The reason my curiousity was piqued is because in VALIS and Radio Free Albemuth, he talks about getting in touch with some famous musicians who were were also contacted by the divine/alien entity and how they all started putting out like hidden messages and codes in their work based on this.
Okay, so on with some quotes I found with mention Lennon and PKD. First is from the bio of Dick on his site:
- Three Stigmata, which deals with a terrifying Gnostic-style demiurgic invasion of earth by means of the eerily permeating hallucinogen “Chew-Z,” so fascinated Beatle John Lennon that he considered making a film of it.
Another article elswhere though says Lennon wanted to film Ubik. Also on that PKD site, there is an interview with him, and he says,
- I would call VALIS a picaresque novel, experimental science fiction. The Divine Invasion has a very conventional structure for science fiction, almost science fantasy; no experimental devices of any kind. Timothy Archer is in no way science fiction; it starts out the day John Lennon is shot and then goes into flashbacks.
So that’s also pretty coincidental, seeing as today is the anniversary of Lennon’s murder. Whoo! Actually, I have a link about that Bishop James Pike guy who is the basis for the Archer book. I’ll post from that in a moment. Anyway, that’s all I’ve managed to track down on the connection between Dick & Lennon.
