The Cloud of Unknowing

Over Thanksgiving, my mother unexpectedly gave me a copy of a classic of Christian mysticism from the 14th century called The Cloud of Unknowing. Have yet to start it and know next to nothing about it. Accounts I’ve read are exceedingly vague and talk about it as being a sort of Zen approach to Christianity. Here’s a clip from it found on Wikipedia:

“And so I urge you, go after experience rather than knowledge. On account of pride, knowledge may often deceive you, but this gentle, loving affection will not deceive you. Knowledge tends to breed conceit, but love builds. Knowledge is full of labor, but love, full of rest.”

It’s been many years since my mother gave me any books to read. Possibly the last time was when I was in fifth grade. In exchange I gave her my copy of Madeleine L’Engles, “The Rock That Is Higher” which turned out to be not what I expected - but she’ll like it very much.
