Heretic

I’m currently reading the Da Vinci Code (which totally sucks, but I’ll come back to that some other time). This is the first paragraph of it, after 234 pages which I’m like “Awesome!” at least in terms of the information it contains.

“An interesting note,” Langdon added. “Anyone who chose the forbidden gospels over Constantine’s version was deemed a heretic. The word heretic derives from that moment in history. The Latin word haereticus means ‘choice.’ Those who ‘chose’ the original history of Christ were the world’s first heretics.”

Actually, I’m quite sure that heresy, as an act, existed long before that, but that’s pretty cool that it’s the word origin. At least according to this. I did double-check the dictionary and the etymology at least checks out. I’ll have to look more into the history.
