The need for heroes

In going back over some of my older writings, I came across a bit I rather like from an article about different heroes that I have had growing up, and the psychological/emotional roles they have helped play.

At some point in your upbringing, “they” try to get you to make the shift from imaginary heroes to ones that exist in the so-called “real” world. But let’s face it, they ALWAYS suck compared to super-heroes. Real life heroes can NEVER fly, and they almost never become heroes because of flipping out and killing a bunch of people.

Actually, I suspect the reason that people start shepherding kids towards having real life heroes, is to start preparing you for your eventual vocation. I mean, no one gets a college scholarship for having an adamantium skeleton. And huge claws aren’t going to land you that comfortable corporate job you’re being groomed for.

If only you could get a college scholarship for having an adamantium skeleton… Or better yet, if you could get a scholarship in order to GET an adamantium skeleton. That’d be pretty kickass as well.
