Media Literacy and Theology
I just came across a pretty interesting program at the University of Edinburgh’s Divinity School. It’s a concentration area in Media and Theology. I think the focus of it is to look at areas where the two intersect, which is something I’m rather interested in. Based on the way they are describing it though, it sounds like they are more interested in looking at how religion is portrayed in media, and how that portrayal impacts people’s perceptions of religion. While I think this is an interesting topic itself, I think it’s really only half the battle. What I’m after is essentially a “theology of media” where you look at how media itself is a religion and how the two not only intersect, but essentially function according to the exact same rules and patterns. If anybody knows of research or writing in this direction, I would be absolutely ecstatic to see it.
