Territorial Pissings
The other night I was drunk and at a bar I wasn’t familiar with. I made my way down to where I expected the bathrooms to be, and went into what seemed like the best bet. Nothing was marked, and I encountered a girl who claimed that this was the girls bathroom, but was leaving so I could use it regardless. Anyway, that’s not the point of the story. The point is that I later found the men’s bathroom in a subsequent urination attempt. As usual, the men’s bathroom was a hundred times grosser. But the thing that struck me more, was that it was covered with stickers. Stickers for bands, for politics, for art, for any kind of nonsense under the sun. And this just got me thinking about gender differences and why the women’s room didn’t have any of this kind of nonsense, but the men’s room was absolutely swimming in shameless self-promotion. I guess “girls don’t need to advertise” or something was the conclusion I sort of came to. I don’t know that it’s really conclusive though, of course. Cause I’m sure there are girls out there with stickers and strange agendas that they are trying to push on people who are taking a whiz. But I wonder if for guys, stuff like that functions almost like how plumage would for birds, like as some kind of indicator of social standing and ambition. Yeah, I don’t know. Just a thought.
