Occult Site Descriptions
Every once in a while I sign up for some service or directory or something that requires me to submit a description of what my blog is all about, yadda yadda yadda. A super-short older description I had was:
- real life paranormal sleuth uncovers mysteries in contemporary spirituality and pop culture.
That one’s just okay. I still like the description I wrote so long ago at the top of this page that goes “I always thought mystical/supernatural shit was really cool, so I became a real-life occult investigator.” I think it’s hilariously clever in it’s simplicity. I also really like that style of language and use it more extensively in my FAQ.
Then you have a different approach that I used for my blogexplosion description:
- Astrology & Anarchism; Archetypes & Art; Christianity & Conspiracies; Pop Culture & Dream; Interpretation; Psychedelics & Psychology; Philip K Dick & Cultural Theory; Shamanism & Sci-Fi; Paganism & Propaganda; Gnosticism & Memes; Outer Space & Occult
Obviously, I was trying more for the buckshot keyword approach. Who knows how successful it was. I don’t get much traffic from the actual listing itself, it seems - since blogexplosion is one of those things where you get traffic by browsing actual blogs themselves.
I’m also trying to sign up for BlogAds to see if I can’t make a little more money in addition to my Google ads (which are working out pretty well, actually - nothing insane, but a nice trickle of money). I don’t want to run ads that are totally off topic, but we’ll see if they have any publishers with anything relevant. Anyway, here is a rather rough first draft for how I might do my site description for that. This one’s really only viewed by advertisers and is supposed to show them what makes my site different.
- “Occult Investigator” probes the bizarre, the hidden, the paranormal and the outlandish, to discover that mysteries and connections abound in the strangest of
places. Peering through the cracks in both pop culture & religion, we eschew labels and circumvent traditional explanations in search of something to sink our minds, hearts and teeth into.
I’m not sure I’ll keep that. I’m basically trying to say that the site and readers (ie, target audience: you jerks) are “smart & edgy” without just coming out and saying “smart & edgy” because that’s stupid.
Anyway, it’s a funny thing to try and do without sounding retarded.
