The Philip K. Dick - Boucher Connection

Somebody just wrote me asking if my dad knew Philip K. Dick, because he supposedly had a friend named Tony Boucher. God almighty would I love it if my dad had known Philip K. Dick. From what I’ve read online though, Tony Boucher is actually the first editor that PKD sold a short story (”Roog”) to in 1952. He ran a magazine called “F & SF” (for fantasy & sci-fi presumably). I think PKD may also have taken some kind of writing workshop with Boucher, and Boucher encouraged him to start trying to sell his stories. An introduction to one of his later short story collections ends:

Tony Boucher—what is the field going to do without him? It was his encouragement that got me to try submitting my stories; I had never imagined that they might sell. Consider this collection as dedicated to Tony and everything he represented. We shall never see another of his like. Te amo, Tony. Forever.

There is also a manuscript proposal online for a book he never wrote which has a character based on Tony Boucher.

From what I understand, my dad actually did live in California when he was a kid, but I’m not sure when exactly. Anyway, I’m pretty sure it was southern California, and not Berkeley. And I’m sure that if there was a famous sci-fi figure in our family, that I would have most assuredly heard about it growing up - seeing as how into sci-fi my dad is. But who knows, there’s certainly a possibility of some kind of relation, but I’d have to look into it more.
