The Self and the World
I hate being a dick, but there are certain kinds of metaphysical writing that I find really annoying. Mainly because they pretend to be about something, but in fact they never actually say anything at all. It’s just walking in circles. My latest example of this comes off a blog I just found called The Self and the World. The blog seems to be a promotional device for a book of the same title, which I looked up on one of the links they gave, and it doesn’t even seem to exist. Anyway, the title of the post is “WAKE UP!” (in all caps like that, yeah). And it starts out:
- Generally speaking, we are quite manipulated by our robotized minds, our egos; we are also manipulated by society. Don’t let yourself be manipulated by them; the fact is that they deceive and messes up people’s life so much.
What? I hate when people especially get onto this whole self-righteous kick about trying to “wake people up,” partly because it’s just cheesy. But also because nobody can do that for somebody. If it’s going to happen at all, it’s going to be because of a person’s own initiative, I think. That is, of course, if it’s even worthwhile at all to talk about things like “waking people up;” I’m not always sure it is.
After that, you have your standard canned admonition not to get into drugs and alcohol. And some kind of thing about how you ought to “get to know yourself deeply.” Gag! Then we have this little item as the big closer:
- Wake up to all of this, do not lose anymore time! All of us deserve to live a life worth living, dignified.
And then there’s a recommendation to check out this person’s book, which may or may not exist. Like, is there anybody reading this that wants to read a book full of this kind of writing? All of us who are alive deserve to live a life worth living while we are still alive. Live, be alive. Be living.
