Midwest Towns Give Away Free Land
I haven’t really looked into this very much, but it seems pretty cool. There are some towns in the Midwest, specifically Kansas (although maybe there are others) that are giving away free plots of land, a la the Homestead Act, in exchange that you move there and build a house. It’s an effort to develop the communities in small towns in a more natural sustainable way without bringing in massive corporations to do it. Specifically, they seem to be looking for people who want to start small businesses and be self-employed, etc. It seems pretty cool. I found out about it through some article on NetZero (NetZero blows goats, by the way).
Anyway, shit, if I had a bit of money, I would probably look into this real hard. I would round me up one of those awesome Amish or Mennonite construction crews, and have them build me up something right good. There are a bunch of different towns in Kansas offering various types of initiatives. If you go to KansasFreeLand.com, you can check them out. Some of them have photos and other stuff to highlight the types of plots available. Some seem to be a lot better deals than others. Anyway, maybe this is a good thing to do if you want to gather up a few friends, and wait for the crash.
PS. Also check out PrairieOpportunity.com. [Thanks Harry!]
