WordPress: Error establishing a database connection

Starting last night, I got the following error any time I tried to login or otherwise access my new Story-Systems blog.

    Error establishing a database connection

This either means that the username and password information in your wp-config.php file is incorrect or we can’t contact the database server at localhost.

    * Are you sure you have the correct username and password?
    * Are you sure that you have typed the correct hostname?
    * Are you sure that the database server is running?

It’s rather a pain in the ass as I was planning on spending most of the day writing in and customizing it. I’ve yet to find the solution, although I did find some info on the WordPress help forums addressing the topic. Most of these people seem to be having the same problem as me: Wordpress has been working perfectly fine for a while, and then suddenly they receive the above error message. The advice seems to be that it has to do with hosting company maintenance and to send them an email. Which I already did. Now we wait. Anybody with any other snappy ideas is welcome to shoot them my way.

UPDATE!

Find out how I solved this problem here!
