I’m happy to finally get this site switched over to running entirely off my own server with WordPress. It’s been a long time coming. It’s great how liberating a change like this can be. Especially coming right now. I feel like my writing has been pushing into some really good new areas, and straining to take on new shapes. And switching over to this new format will free up some of my mental resources to really tackle that head-on.
I was thinking a couple nights ago, while struggling with installing this system, how important it is to “prepare the vessel.” That is, there are times in your life when you can just feel a change is coming, or a series of changes. It can be sort of frustrating or stressful as you wait for them to fully manifest. I think, for me, a good trick is to not only encourage the change, but prepare some means to house it. I guess it’s like throwing up your sails when you feel the wind blowing. Or to go back to the vessel metaphor - when change is pouring into your life, you can either let it splatter chaotically, or you can prepare the vessel. Not so much in the sense of a container, because trying to contain change is probably worse than ignoring it all together.
I didn’t realize till just now how appropriate the word vessel really is to this discussion. On the one hand, it can mean a hollow container to pour something in. But it also can mean a ship or craft that you use to navigate air or water. Plus, when a person is a vessel, they are said to be “agent or embodiment, as of a quality.” Plus you have the whole thing about blood vessels. It’s really rather perfect.
Anyway, now that the vessel has been prepared by updating this site, I’m freed up to really ride the crest of whatever change is happening.
