Floating Dreams of Highschool

Every so often I have dreams about highschool. Quite frequently in these dreams, I find myself back there, just about to graduate, but some element is missing. Some credit unfulfilled. It’s often gym class, because I skipped it so many times. As a result, my graduation is threatened. I tend to see these dreams relating more to my dropping out of college, and leaving that unfinished. I don’t have any (conscious) regrets about that though. So maybe it’s just symbolic of something else from which I am very near “graduating” but am missing one key component.

This morning I had a very different dream which took place in my highschool. It wasn’t the “real” version of my highschool it usually is. It was a mythologized version. In it, I was not quite the same person. None of the people I knew. And for some reason, I was popular. Which was not quite the case in highschool. I wasn’t a total outcast, but neither was I in any inner circles of coolness.

In this dream though, I somehow managed to make out with four different popular girls in one day. Except they weren’t any girls. Each one was the leader of a sort of “gang” of girls. I also understood that each girl was basically the “ruler” of a different directional quadrant of the cafeteria. They were broken into north-west, north-east, south-west and south-east. After making out with all of them in turn in various settings, school was cancelled for the rest of the day due to a blizzard which had come rapidly in.

Everyone else raced out to catch the buses home. I however exited through the side door in the cafeteria to make my way home on foot. But instead I floated. This is also a fairly common occurrence in dreams. It’s not quite flying. It’s more like I’m sitting a few feet off the ground in the air, and I travel in perfect straight lines through it. I headed out past the football field. Once there, I realized that it had been converted from a football field to a giant fenced in field where a herd of wild brown horses grazed. I floated past them hoping they wouldn’t notice and charge at me. Towards the other end of the field, two boys I presumably knew from school had a collection of papers or ads of some kind. They were crinkling the pages up and throwing them into the air. If they did it the right way, this would attract the attention of an eagle who was flapping about at the end of the field. He would suddenly dive bomb and grab the papers, thinking they were birds.

I floated past them as well, moving above the trees and over various landscapes towards my home. I eventually came to two people walking along a street: a man and a woman. The woman noticed me, and said that I’d “figured it out” - how to float that is. She’d been studying the ancient books trying to figure out how to do it herself but had been unsuccessful. At this point, either her or I stated that I should take what I’ve learned and teach others to do it as well. I floated on past them over a field of thorns towards an barn and woke up.

man i am ALWAYS dreaming about being just about to graduate but missing a few credits. i wonder if it’s some archetype of our generation.

weird… thank god im not the only one. that shit happens REALLY frequently sometimes. lately its been going away though. theres this dream, and then theres one last week where i dreamt i had to take this big exam to graduate. then in the dream i commented how this was just like dreams id been having. i didnt realize that it was actually a dream too, but i did decide i wasnt going to take the test.

maybe it has to do with like delayed entry into adulthood or into a sense of legitimacy or something like that

weird, i have had two weird high school dreams too in the last few months, in the latest one i was floating as well, but in a different way than you.

i think its ’cause we are taking over the school.

hm, i actually really like that interpretation john. about taking over the school. thats in part what my dream indicated - that i was joining into a union with these feminine sort of archetypal guardians of the system. also relevant is that at the end of the dream, there was that instruction that i teach other people.

i’m also inclined to see the thing of the horses vs. the eagle as being some kind of body/spirit dichotomy. still sorting that out though…

also, the last one i had, i actually had a gun and was shooting the trickser archetype!
