Benedict XVI as Gloria Olivae

The latest buzz around the new pope is that Ratzinger has immediately already fulfilled the Papal Prophecies of St. Malachy.

St. Malachy’s prediction for the next pope was “De Gloria Olivae” meaning the Glory of the Olives. Find out more about that at my original post on the subject. Also check out CrystalLinks on it:

The Glory of the Olive. The Order of St. Benedict has said this Pope will come from their order. It is interesting that Jesus gave his apocalyptic prophecy about the end of time from the Mount of Olives. This Pope will reign during the beginning of the tribulation Jesus spoke of. The 111th prophesy is “Gloria Olivae” (The Glory of the Olive). The Order of Saint Benedict has claimed that this pope will come from their ranks. Saint Benedict himself prophesied that before the end of the world his Order, known also as the Olivetans, will triumphantly lead the Catholic Church in its fight against evil.

And here we have Ratzinger choosing the name “Benedict XVI.” Also I spotted a thread on Rigorous Intuition’s forum with more information on this. From that:

The name Ratzinger has chosen for himself is Benedict XVI. There’s a crackpot-scented extremo-Catholic website called catholicplanet.com, and they have already been predicting that the next Pope would call him himself exactly that.

And I checked Google’s cache of the site - they’ve been saying this since before John Paul II died. They didn’t just rush to throw a false retroactive prediction on the web.

To arrive at their predictions, they rely upon the Nostadamus-like prognostication of one Saint Malachy O’Morgair, who wrote a Catholic-centric “history of the future” in 1139.

They had predicted that Benedict XVI would be black, however, and about three minutes ago they’ve just added a notation to this page, …that acknowledges their mistake. However, perhaps they didn’t make a mistake. Perhaps “black pope” doesn’t refer here to skin color, but to evil intent in the heart.

The post also continues:

More troubling is this prediction frpm the same page:

“Pope Benedict XVI will die prior to, or at the very beginning of, World War III. Therefore, he will die in either 2009 or 2010.”

CatholicPlanet also has a “map of the future” with more prophetic information of this nature.

While this is all certainly very freaky, I’d like to point out two things. First is that it’s believed that St. Malachy’s prophetic list of popes was nothing more than a forgery. This of course doesn’t stop people from taking it seriously, nor does it explain some of the coincidences seen above.

Even more important than that though is that I don’t think the Apocalypse fantasy is actually a literal event. I think it’s better understood as a psycho-spiritual event wherein the old patterns of the mind are swept out, and refreshed. In a way, it’s also very similar to the function that protest music served in the 60’s and 70’s. It was a means for those without power to invent a safe fictional ground wherein they could imagine themselves with more power. It’s actually a very important mental and emotional tool in this light. For more on that, I have a detailed post about the Psychological Function of the Apocalypse. I recommend reading it before you run around screaming about the end of the world (even if it is actually coming…).

PS. Jeremy has an interesting post on the choice of names in Pope Benedict XVI. Turns out that during Benedict XV’s reign, the “miracle” of Fatima occurred, which had everything to do with denouncing Communism and Russa. Ratzinger is also closely connected to the Fatima mysteries, and a huge opponent of supposed “Marxist” Liberation Theology. Coincidence? No such thing…

Even if the St. Malachy prophecy is a hoax from 1600’s, don’t you find it odd that current popes fit the descriptions of the hoax? Are you suggesting Popes are elected and/or take names which fulfill a forged prophecy?

What about the girls from Garabandel - and the propgecy that a mircle will happen there straight after we see our “souls” where the world will stand still…then 3 days of darkness will occur, I believe 8 days later… What of Mari Loli - who with her sisters are to tell the world this will occur, so we can repent and prepare. You don’t mention this.

The Catholic Church knows about the prophecy of Malachi regarding the Popes, and it appears to me that then the Popes are chosen to fulfill the prophecy. In other words self-fulfulling prophecy.

“Garabandal” seems like a pretty typical marian apparition to me. control mechanisms and whatnot. shares characteristics with the rest, including ufo-related abduction scenarios, focus on sacrament, penance, repentence, etc. there’s also typical “chastisements.” yet another case of the queen of heaven appearing to a bunch of kids and forcing them to tell the world to repent or be damned.

pretty wild, imho. now, why exactly is it that mary never appears to, you know, the head of the church? why’s she gotta pick a bunch of peasant kids or an underpass wall? thas what i wanna know.

All the comments about “Olive” signifying St Benedict or the Benedictine Order is based on a misunderstanding. The symbol of St Benedict is a pitcher. Joseph Ratzinger is not and never has been a Benedictine anyway. There is, in fact, an Order of Mount Olivet, also known as the Olivetans, and they do follow the rule of St Benedict, but they are a fairly small order; they are not synonymous with the Benedictines.

In the phrase “gloria olivae”, the attention of interpreters seems mainly to have been grabbed by the second word to the exclusion of the first, but both are equally important. It strikes me that the phrase has two possible meanings. Firstly, it could signify a victor at the Olympic games, who in ancient times (as in 2004 at Athens) were crowned with wreathes of wild olive. Go joy there. Secondly, it could imply that the pope will be awarded the Nobel Peace Prize or be honoured in some similar way as a peacemaker. I wouldn’t bet on it.

i noticed that this new pope has said that his goal is to unite all the churches. i take it that it means to make amends with the protestent churches. there is a book by Ellen White that talks about that among other things. i thought you may want to let your followers have a chance to read up on that and she also discusses the catholic church as being the anti christ. not the people of the church but its order. i think the title of the book it the great controvercy. enjoy
