Benedict, Patron Saint of Europe

I want to post something, even though it’s not quite a full-fledged thought. It’s more of a hunch and an interesting connection. For a while, I’ve had the impression - for whatever reason - that the next pope is going to be a major player in European politics, especially in relation to the European Union (EU). I don’t have a lot to support that hunch, although I’ve heard more prophecy than you can shake a stick at (especially lately) about Muslims invading Europe, Rome falling, and other shit like that.

Anyway, in light of this possibility, I came across an interesting piece of trivia today. It seems the original St. Benedict (or one of them, anyway) is actually the Patron Saint of Europe. There are a handful of other saints to whom Catholicism also attributes this designation. To be honest, I’m not sure how they decide such things - but I will look into it.

There are also a couple of other rather interesting things St. Benedict is patron of. In light of Ratzinger/Benedict XVI’s past resistance to heresy it seems interesting that his namesake is invoked for protection against witchcraft and poison. And in light of all the prophecies of doom and gloom, its kinda crazy that St. Benedict also is invoked on behalf of “servants who have broken their master’s belongings.” The way I’m reading that is the Pope as the servant of God “breaks” the Church, which is his master’s belongings.

A close reading of his profile might also be in order:

Studied in Rome, but was dismayed by the lack of discipline and the lackadasical attitude of his fellow students. Fled to the mountains near Subiaco, living as a hermit in a cave for three years; reported to have been fed by a raven. His virtues caused an abbey to request him to lead them. Founded the monastery at Monte Cassino, where he wrote the Rule of his order. His discipline was such that an attempt was made on his life; some monks tried by poison him, but he blessed the cup and rendered it harmless. He returned to his cave, but continued to attract followers, and eventually established twelve monasteries. Had the ability to read consciences, prophesy, and forestall attacks of the devil. Destroyed pagan statues and altars, drove demons from groves sacred to pagans.

Anyway, it does offer some interesting parallels to both what I’ve heard about Ratzinger’s past and his supposed future. If nothing else, it’s more fuel for the fires of speculation…
