An Army of None: Draft Watch

Did you hear the news? Now you can fight in God’s Wars for only 15 months! Yippee! The Army announced yesterday that new recruits will be allowed to serve 15-month long active-duty enlistments, making this the shortest enlistment period ever. Why, I think I’m gonna go join the Army of Tomorrow, today!

Don’t worry though, just because you only sign up for 15 months of combat doesn’t mean that’s all you get. The loving folks at the Army don’t want you to miss a second of fun!

Recruits in the new 15-month program could serve in 59 of the more than 150 jobs in the Army, including the combat infantry, and then serve two years in the Reserve or National Guard.

They would finish their eight-year military obligation in the Guard or Reserve, volunteer programs such as AmeriCorps or the Peace Corps, or the Individual Ready Reserve, a pool of former active-duty troops who can still be called to duty but aren’t affiliated with any military unit.

Oh cool, so we only have to fight them dirty Iraqis for 15 months, and then after that, we’re free to be called into active duty at any time for the next 8 years! Sweet! What a deal! I’m sure they won’t keep us over there longer than 15 months either - especially since they haven’t already instituted a de facto draft, with the so-called “stop loss” order, which prevents soldiers from leaving the armed forces.

This article makes heavy mention of how the army isn’t going to have enough troops, come 2006 either. Even with their fancy sweet awesome new deal from Heaven. Hey, wait a minute! They’re trying out a “more lenient” recruitment policy AND readying us for the fact that they’re about to “run out” of soldiers - as soon as next year - this doesn’t mean…. does it? ….. that a draft is coming? Perish the thought!

Well, a draft would be politically damaging to this administration. Think of all those Bush supporters who, although they “support the troops”, never imagined that they or their children would actually have to put themselves in harm’s way. How would they react to a draft?

There’s been a lot of discussion about the political consequences of a draft at both Eschaton and Americablog. It’s not clear that anybody knows for sure what is going to happen, but I think Bush and Rumsfeld will hold off for as long as possible.
