Unfortunately, for many of us, life already is like a barbecue – and we are the meat roasting on the grill. The collapse of the giant killing machine that is our civilization might seem like an idea with possibilities, but the machine has already steamrollered so many of us, in both body and spirit, that we are barely holding on as it is. Overwhelmed as I already am, with depression and anxiety and social phobia and all that kind of fun stuff, I can’t imagine what would become of me if it all fell apart. This society specializes in taking bright, imaginative people and breaking their spirits with intolerance, stupidity and cruelty, and as a result, many of us who have the talents and inclinations to be a part of something better probably aren’t going to be much good for anything if the End comes.

The problem with this scenario is the human misery index. It’s goijg to be tough to be a cheerful tribe when a toothache* is a life-threatening illness, or when any of our modern me4dical take-for-granteds fail.

*My own personal example. Two weeks ago, I was watching a special about King Tut, where they were doing a forensic examination of the mummy. One possibility put forward as a cause of death was a tooth problem. I did some head shaking and didn’t give it any more thought until I developed the same dental problem. Two painful surgeries later, I am no longer “cautiously optinmistic” about the failure of civilization.
