Thanks to Off the Beaten Track (a progressive exploratory Christian blog) for bringing to light a really interesting Bible quote. It comes to us from 1 Thessalonians 5:21
Test everything. Hold on to the good.
Actually, the passage is usually quoted in it’s larger context, verses 19-22:
19 Do not put out the Spirit’s fire; 20 do not treat prophecies with contempt. 21 Test everything. Hold on to the good. 22 Avoid every kind of evil.
This is especially interesting, because elsewhere in that same book, 1 Thessalonians, is where people nowadays have derived the “prophecy” of The Rapture from. While Paul admonishes us not to trash prophecies, he also tells us to test them (to test everything in fact) and throw away anything that isn’t good. So what I want to know is did he leave any clues elsewhere about how to test things - especially prophecies - to see if they are “good”? I’ve never seen anybody talk about this.
It’s also interesting that this is so close to the slogan of EA Games: “Challenge Everything.” It’s almost an anarcho-gnostic message. Plus check out this similar message among Buddhist scripture.

Dear friends, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, because many false prophets have gone out into the world.
