Dylan Dream
Last night I had a dream where I was in an apartment in NYC with some friends. We we heard this music coming from the street. It was Bob Dylan, playing in a nearby park. I decided I had to go down and check it out; there was no way I was gonna miss it. For some reason, I had this weird annoying kid that I had to take along with me. May have been this annoying neighbor brat who lives on my street and is always screaming and rides his bike straight towards you on the sidewalk. Anyway, we get down there and there’s this ampitheatre that was supposed to be called the “Fox Theatre” or something, and is supposed to have been really famous. I dont think it exists though in real life. Anyway we go and sit down towards the middle, and suddenly I realize that Dylan has like a highschool band playing for him, and they are sitting dispersed among the audience. But they were really good, and he was going up and down the aisles like he was a preacher or something. And he didnt have a shirt on, but he had this crazy long white coat on with all these colorful patches on it. And then in between songs the stupid kid I brought asked him a question, something like “Why are you wearing such a stupid coat?” And I was totally embarrassed. But Dylan (who was younger and looked sort of different) laughed, and then he came over and put the coat on the kid, and said, “Here: I’ll show you why!” Then he played another song and let the kid wear it a while. Then he came and put it back on, and the kid was like amazed out of his mind, and made some kind of comment about how Dylan “talks to you like you’re an adult” or something along those lines (because he was used to everybody treating him like a stupid kid). Anyway, then I sat back down in my chair and Dylan played some other song (I’m trying to figure out which) and during it, I had to choke back tears. But they were those kind where like you’re really happy and sad at the same time. And then I turned and said to the kid: “See, this is why you live in New York…”
