scientology is an example of a science fiction writer gaining a following of lost souls who,for whatever reason, bought into his system of becoming "clear" and paid him well for it. it is a cult. though catholicism is too,as are most religions and corporations.
whenever a person gives up thier personal power, whether to a spouse, church, government or whatever, they become shaped by whatever they subscribe to. if you met jim jones you were going to die. if you met the n.y.yankees you were off to the world series.
l. ron hubbard was a man who moved in hollywood circles in the 40`s and sold his philosophy to the rich. he re-invested back into publishing and developing scientology to the point where it exists all over the world. i think it was outlawed in germany recently and l know the pope doesn`t like the competition but can`t really make a fuss because he does the same gig.
