Word(s) of the Day

Ipsedixitism:

Ipsedixitism is the pejorative term for an unsupported rhetorical assertion; the term in Logic for a missing argument.

An ipsedixitism is not explicitly defined as an axiom, and certainly not as a “premise”, but often appears as such in a syllogism like: “The economy needs more scientists, so expansion of science education will boost the future economy”. The proposition rests on an ipsedixitism unless reasons are given that the “economy needs more scientists”.

In more general usage, it means simply “an unsupported dogmatic assertion”. Since we’re having so much fun, here’s another one:

Maieutics:

Maieutics is a method of teaching introduced by Socrates. It is based on the idea that the truth is latent in the mind of every human being due to his innate reason but has to be “given birth” by questions asked by the teacher and answers given by the student.

The word is derived from the Greek “maieutikos”, pertaining to midwifery.

Midwifery, that’s great! I suppose this also relates to the mythic act by which the goddess Athena was born:

Her mother was Metis, goddess of wisdom and Zeus’ first wife. In fear that Metis would bear a son mightier than himself. Zeus swallowed her and she began to make a robe and helmet for her daughter. The hammering of the helmet caused Zeus great pain in the form of headaches and he cried out in agony. Skilled Hephaestus ran to his father and split his skull open and from it emerged Athena, fully grown and wearing her mother’s robe and helmet.

Interesting that one of the domains of Athena was wisdom, and that she springs forth out of an error (refusal of the consort) much like the Materia and the Demiurge spring forth from Sophia, Aeon of wisdom in Gnosticism. Also seems worth noting that Hephaestus is the smith, the craftsman of the gods, and that it’s by his cunning technique that wisdom is drawn forth.
