St. Mark the Evangelist

This week, I’m helping my brother do some stained glass work. We are painting the Four Evangelists: Matthew, Mark, Luke & John. Today I painted Mark. Interestingly enough, I did a little reading about him earlier, and it turns out that he is the patron saint of stained glass craftsmen. Go figure.

Does anybody happen to know of a good saints website? There are a couple mainstream Catholic ones that are okay, but nothing great I’ve come across. But I’m also curious to find a site that features not only traditional Catholic meanings, but also Santeria, Voudoun and related syncretic uses of saints. Any leads, let me know.

The Catholic Encyclopedia will have pretty informative articles on the saints up to about 1900. Not sure of Voodoo site. The main use of the saints in voodoo are as stand-ins for the traditional African gods/spirits. It would be interesting to see an exhaustive list of which god each saint is standing in for.

In afro Brasilian religion you may look for “orixas” or “umbanda” and saints. But most of the identifications between entities are overlapping previous sincretism between catholic saints atributes with roman, phoenician, iberian celtic, pagan gods and heroes worshipped before in portugal, italy, etc… It´s a never ending process. I wonder what we’l have next?

Uh, Alfredo, this site seems to be in French. Maybe I’m missing the English part…

PS. Just to clarify… I’m well aware of the terms and what to look for in this area. I was mainly asking if anybody knew any handy references
