Intelligent Falling

I have real mixed feelings about the Onion, but this is pretty funny: Evangelical Scientists Refute Gravity With New “Intelligent Falling” Theory.

KANSAS CITY, KS—As the debate over the teaching of evolution in public schools continues, a new controversy over the science curriculum arose Monday in this embattled Midwestern state. Scientists from the Evangelical Center For Faith-Based Reasoning are now asserting that the long-held “theory of gravity” is flawed, and they have responded to it with a new theory of Intelligent Falling.

“Things fall not because they are acted upon by some gravitational force, but because a higher intelligence, ‘God’ if you will, is pushing them down,” said Gabriel Burdett, who holds degrees in education, applied Scripture, and physics from Oral Roberts University.

My biggest problem with the Onion is that the headlines are often hysterical, and then the first paragraphs are decent, and then by the time you’re halfway in it turns into a major yawn. But maybe that’s just me.

yeah, if the punchline’s in the heading and i’ve laughed already, why keep reading?

i prefer t-shirt slogans to longwinded satire. i’ve only got so much attention to pay.

That puts a new spin on both the angelic and commercial uses of I’ve Fallen, And I Can’t Get Up!

Most people don’t read past the headline and topic sentences in regular newspapers, so maybe The Onion realizes this and writes their stuff accordingly.

The best feature is the one where they feature “historical” front pages from the past. Some of those are incredibly funny.
