Another line I like from the gnostic Gospel of Philip:

The rulers thought that it was by their own power and will that they were doing what they did, but the Holy Spirit in secret was accomplishing everything through them as it wished.

The “rulers” in this case I take to mean the archons - the comic book style bad guys of gnosticism. But it seems that this line might be applied more broadly to those things that we think we are doing of our power, manifesting our will into existence. Is something else really operating through us secretly, letting us think we’re doing it ourselves, like a parent with a child?
