Stained Glass Posters

Eucharist Stained GlassJust thought I’d share a small design I put together for my brother’s stained glass company. It’s nothing terribly intricate, but it’s the first window design I’ve done myself.

The linework was all done in Illustrator and the coloring in Photoshop. My brother actually has a funny story about this technique. It seems that most of the stained glass industry consists of fairly old men, with little or no computer savvy. Most of them when they do preliminary sketches do it in colored pencil or watercolor. I’ve seen a couple. And I’ll be honest - they look like shit. Anyway, the story goes that when my brother first started doing these sketches on the computer instead of by hand, one of the guys at a shop asked him how he got a photo of the window before it was even done. That stuff cracks me up, cause as nice as these are (and my brother has some great ones here), they certainly don’t look like photos. At least not to me.

Anyway, at some point, I’d like to try to combine this stained glass graphic style with my illustration techniques in Photoshop. Maybe even do them full size and put them on posters. Seems like that would be pretty rad. I’d want to do some weird and/or occult ones especially, because there’s very little non-Christian stained glass imagery out there, and it seems rife to be hijacked towards other ends.

Also, in case you’re part of some religious community that needs stained glass work done, let me know, and I’ll pass you along my brother’s contact information. He also does commissions. There’s a cool one he’s doing right now for a guy in Key West of a Tibetan Buddha which is really complex and beautiful.

I like your “small design.” And thanks for the link to your brother’s gallery. Impressive, heavy-hitting stuff.

The next time I even hear a rumour that a church/group is looking to have some stained glass work done, I am going to slip them Peter’s URL.

Yeah the Japanese style is a really good possible match for stained glass stuff. I’ve also been wanting to do stained glass windows incorporating tattoo imagery, cause the line work and coloration is really similar, nevermind the overlap of religious & symbolic imagery
