Walking Backwards From the Goal



While looking around for information on increasing site traffic and search engine ranking, I happened across a page with some advice which seems more mystical than anything. Check it out:

Walking backwards from the goal means starting at the end result. Find something that has already reached the end result that you are after. Observe it and analyze what causes this end result, backtracking step by step from the end result to where you are now. As you do so keep your feet on the ground, that is, look at the pure facts of the matter. No hype, no “I hope” or “I think”, no theories. Just pure facts from observation. Finally walk forward. Re-apply the facts you discovered, step-by-step, without inventing or re-inventing anything. Follow blindly, no matter how silly or simple the path you have uncovered may appear to be. And you will be guaranteed success as long as you are acting in the same environment as the one in which you observed your end result.

Very interesting when applied in a broader context I think. Reminds me of what little I’ve heard about modelling successful behaviors in NLP and related disciplines.

    an analogy from soccer; one of my midfielders wanted to score more goals. his role was mostly toward the outside of the field of play. i asked him where he found that most of the goals were scored in soccer. he said that most of the goals scored in soccer are inside of twenty yards from the goal toward the center of the field of play. correct.
    then i asked him to describe the majority of his play movement.answer) outside of that strike zone.
    we built a visualisation exercise whereby he saw himself inside the strike zone and how he felt, what he saw and how he was moving and hearing while he was there. then we physically went into that zone on the field and felt what it actually felt like to be there. then we identified the different feelings he experienced in the two different zones, where he felt strong and where he felt weaker in each instance. then i showed him how to take the strengths from the old positions and installed them into the new model he was developing for striking inside the new zone. we keyed in on the strongest kinaesthetic or “thrill” signals he got while entering the new zone.
    we practiced firing off the newly aquired feelings as he saw himself running into the new zone over and over for a few minutes until he got diminished returns in the practice. then he slept on it with instructions on visualising the new actions and getting the feelings when he woke up an most importantly during preperation for the game.
    he immediately drove into the new zone during the next game and we had to adjust other players positions because of the dramatic change in his delivery during the game.
    this practice is used in everything from business to relationships to athletics because it`s all we do inside our heads. we throw our version of reality onto our own internal screen and then react to it. clinically we are all insane. the only reality testing we have is what we make up.
