The Black Knight Satellite

I highly recommend checking out this article, the Black Knight from Outer Space on something called the Black Knight Satellite.

In Disneyland of the Gods, John Keel writes of the Black Knight satellite. Never mind the almanac. You won’t find it listed with Sputnik or Explorer. Black Knight is the name given to a radar blip discovered in 1960. This mystery satellite was found in a polar orbit, something neither the US nor the Soviets had accomplished. It was several times larger and several times heavier than anything capable of being launched with 1960 rockets. It shouldn’t have been there, but it was.

If that weren’t enough, ham operators began receiving odd messages from the Black Knight. One operator decoded a series of these messages as a star map. The map centered on Epsilon Boštes as seen from the earth 13,000 years ago. Remember, stars don’t move very far even after 13,000 years, and Epsilon Boštes is moving towards us. Only the neighboring stars appear different after that amount of time. Was the Black Knight an alien calling card?

The article then correlates this weird tidbit to Philip K. Dick’s experience with the alleged sentient satellite which he termed VALIS. This of course happened in 1974. In any event, that’s a whole other cool story on it’s own. I’m curious if anybody has heard mention of this Black Knight Satellite anywhere else, especially what happened to it. Did they ever receive other signals from it, if it ever even really existed? In Philip K. Dick’s book Radio Free Albemuth, as far as I remember, they shoot the VALIS/ZEBRA satellite down. I’m gonna read it again though. Does anybody know any other stories or legends of sentient satellites?

Thank you for stopping by and the word of advice. :)

Does Barbelith from Morrison’s Invisibles count? Of course, that was probabled a homage to VALIS in the first place.

Me and my buddy Clay are very much on the same wave as you. In fact when I found your site a few months ago I couldn’t help but post a ton of links to it, as you intersected with so many of our current interests, pursuits and synchronicities.. We’ve been VALIS chasing for a while now, and we came across this shit last year, see his post and my reply:

I didn’t ask him where he got that from but a search produces:

in my reply post i mention the “10 books of Phil Dick’s metanovel” that he talks about (apparently) in his (very hard to find) “in pursuit of valis:excerpts from the exegesis”… I’ve bought all 10 and I’ve got two left to read.. we’re sort of (half-jokingly, but doesn’t it always start that way) putting together a theory that something happened to Dick, related to this, and his metanovel is a cryptic version of the transmission he received.. and it’s related to the (sirius) transmission Robert Anton Wilson received at the same time as Dick’s ‘experience’ in ‘74 (cf ‘the cosmic trigger’). i’m also working on the idea that reading certain authors (ones who’ve received transmissions?) tends to produce a very consistent and acute form of synchronicity, that’s something like precognition and retrocognition, called epicognition..). Any experience with weird synchronicity when reading Phil Dick or RAW?

Here’s some more links on this that I managed to dig up…including the link that Adam was good enough to post already…

i got beamed once. a white flash of beamed energy paralysed me for a short period while i lay in my bed one morning. i have searched my memory for the source of the beam and have so far drawn a blank. no transmitters in space or anything. life is an odd ride sometimes.
probably the single most puzzling event i`ve ever experienced.

    *chortle*

I just started reading VALIS and already the synchronicity’s rsmping up. (c.f. me and another blogger both being awoken by upsetting dreams involving physical pain and both separately writing about it on the same morning).

you should definitely read Radio Free Albemuth to supplement that. Its the same basic story told in a completely different way and sheds a lot of light on the whole thing.

I remember reading an article about that satellite when I was a child (I think it was in Analog, but I’m not sure).

FYI - everyone needs to check out: _ Lies, Inc. _ too

basicly it’s Dick’s both first _and_ last book, at the same time. That’s a neat trick.
