Omniglot!

Just happened across a really cool website called Omniglot, which describes itself as “a guide to written language.” They have collected “over 150 different writing systems. Each page contains an illustration of a writing system; details of its origin, usage, notable features and the language(s) written with it; a sample text, and useful links.”

There are tons of cool things to look at here. The links, info and illustrations are all of very high quality. Also check out their FAQ page, and a page of open “puzzles” submitted to readers to help decipher mysterious scripts and images on objects. This page of written alphabets constructed by visitors to the site is also really cool - heck, I haven’t found anything on here that I don’t think is really cool and worth spending a really long time poring over in great detail.

Whenever I read Jung I have to wade through a lot of Greek and Latin quotes, and Omniglot has always been really useful to me whenever I do that. Classical Greek is fun to read because you see for yourself how much it’s influenced the English language. And on top of that it’s very beautiful. Every beautiful word I know got handed down to us either from the Greeks or the French. Of course, as GNOSTICS, we experience that reality every day in our faith.
