The Del Monte Dollar



This is a really bizarre item. Apparently there is a new misprinted $20 bill out which is driving collectors “bananas.” No one quite knows how or why but this mysterious bill seems to have been printed with a Del Monte fruit sticker embedded in it.

Supposedly the bill has been analyzed and its a “real” mistake rather than an after-the-fact addition - whatever that mean. Anyway, the photo is worth checking out. Very strange. According to USA Today, the fruity bill has reached an online auction auction price of $14,000. Viral marketing for Del Monte products? Seems pretty unlikely. Whatever the explanation, its certainly very strange…

    Seems pretty interesting. Both the misprint (eye’m surprised that, if somethin’ like this was gonna happen, that logo isn’t for Texaco or something) and the subsequent auction.

    Money is a marketing tool, for sure. It’s one of those strange occurences that points to that, perhaps. One of them lil’ Ubik messages.

    Like this is a portent of paper money finally being overtaken by the economy of pure brand and symbol trading (money is just one, general, agreed upon one…but perhaps in future, you pay for apple computer products with an agreed upon equivalent value of mott’s apple-sauce logos; pay for your next Loew’s movie experience with a set-price of Fox Searchlight icons…Welcome to The Age of Symbol Barter.)

    Or maybe real fruit and tangible commodities of life (food and water) is poised to retake our system of exchange and obsolete representational modes of economic transaction.
    Would this not be plausible in a future of water and resource shortage? (Or would it just be more widespread trade and commerce via exchange of commensurate gunshot wounds?)

    Just a couple thoughts.

    Or maybe it just means they should frame the twenty as Outsider Art and canonize the dude on the assembly-line who was eating the banana the new Duchamp!

    HELLO! I HAVE A 1996 $20.00 DOLLAR BILL WHICH IS MISSING THE HOLOGRAPHIC “20″ IMAGE THAT IS SUPPOSED TO BE LOCATED ON THE FRONT BOTTOM RIGHT CORNER OF THE BILL.
