Technical Assistance Request!

Do you know PHP really well? Are you into creating WordPress plugins? Good, then keep reading. The rest of you can take a hike. I have a WordPress plugin that I would really like to have built, but I don’t quite have the technical wherewithall to create it myself.

Let me describe it to you, and if you’d like to help, let me know.

Basically, what I’m looking for is a plugin that would allow each of the comments people leave on my site to live on their own individual “comment page.” The way it would work is that when you’re viewing a normal old post page, you’ll see all the comments for that post listed underneath it. But when you click on the permalink for any of those comments, it takes you to a page which contains the following:

  1. Same basic layout as the post page except you’d see only an excerpt of the original post, rather than the whole thing, plus a bit of explanatory text which reads “This is a comment page, etc”.
  2. Instead of all the comments for that post, you’d see only the permalinked comment in it’s entirety.
  3. Links which take you to “Next Comment,” “Previous Comment,” “View All Comments” & “Leave a comment.”
  4. The “View All” option would simply take you back to the normal post page. The “Leave comment” would take you to the normal post page, with a target pointing to the comment form. The “Next” and “Previous” buttons would take you to the next or last comment in the sequence - displayed on its own individual comment page as well.
  5. The individual comment page would have a unique URL which looks something like this at the end: “post-title/comment-15″. This would require mod rewrite rules to be added to the htaccess file - I think. (The way WordPress currently handles this is something like: “post-title/#comment-15″ where the # indicates a target on the page named “post-title”. Mine would instead create a subpage, rather than a target on that page)
  6. Within the <title>, whatever the page title is, it would automatically tack on a “Comment 15″ to the end of it. That one’s optional, but it would be nice.
  7. This bit of coding wizardry should use the plugin architecture of WordPress. I’m currently running version 1.5, but if you built it in 2.0, then I’d upgrade so I can use it. It would also be nice if you made the plugin freely available for other interested WP users, since that’s the spirit of the open-source community.

Overall, it’s probably not the world’s hardest plugin to build, especially since you might be able to re-purpose some of the code from Keyvan’s paged comments plugin (which is sort of similar, but not quite). If there’s anybody who’d like to help a brother out with this, let me know. I don’t really have any money to throw at you, thanks to my upcoming move. But maybe we could trade a little bit of freelance design, or some kind of other arrangement. Or you could do it just cause you like me so much and want to help a brother out. That works too! Either way, drop me an email. Thanks!
