Amish Time Travel
I had a really bizarre and long dream last night about an Amish family who went on a great voyage. Now, it’s difficult for me to say exactly what the circumstances were surrounding their voyage. All I can say for certain was that one of the daughters of the family had come down with a great, possibly supernatural malady. And they had to travel across the country on some kind of spiritual pilgrimage to solve this situation.
Now, there is a chance that this family was also travelling through time as well as space. That is, that they’d voyaged out of the past - literally - to the present day to partake in this ritual. I remember horse-drawn carriages at the beginning of the dream, and high speed trains towards the end. It was also evident in this dream that, despite what literal time period they came from, they’d never been exposed to “our world” before. I remember being there as the family roamed through a modern day department store, awed by the wonders found there. Also, this may have just been symbolic, but the section of the store that held books was completely empty, like it had been removed or rummaged through. All that remained was debris.
In any case, towards the end of the dream, this family was in a small archaic church that I’ve never been to in real life but which I’m sure was located in rural Maryland. I don’t recall being an actual participant in any of the action - I may have just been an observer. But I remember sitting through some kind of peculiar mass or high ritual being performed by none other than George W. Bush. In this dream, he seemed totally contrite and truly a man of God. I remember him holding up candles against the backdrop of this small church’s altar while the assembled congregation sang and prayed. Afterwards, this family was assembled around him bowing their heads, and he put his hands on their heads as he prayed fervently. The father of the family slowly moved about the church after the service was over collecting scraps of candles and other artifacts which were now energetically “charged” and which could be used to heal his daughter.
We all left to return home by train. The train was a massive caravan of luggage, ancient and modern train cars, bicycles, cars and trucks. People of all sorts boarded the train, including popular celebrities of today. Then I woke up, not knowing for certain if the daughter had been healed or not.

Well, at first as I was reading this I thought there wasn’t anything really so strange about the Amish being surprised by a department store, and entering a whole new world, because essentially they do try to stay away from “our world.” Remember that short-lived piece of reality garbage “Amish in the City?” Anyway, then Bush rolled around, and I thought: Alternate universe. The way things should have/could have been. Bush is obviously a religious kind of guy (at least now, anyway. I can’t speak for the 70s) and can you imagine what would have happened if he’d gone into the priesthood at an early age instead of getting pushed into (failing) business affairs?
It could also be read as a kind of summary of today’s world. The simple people of the world are hurting (or alternatively, the old ways are dying) and they’re trying to look to “modern” life for solutions. The department store would represent our consumer culture, and the lack of books is symbolic of the lack of any real knowledge or substance within that culture. The fact that Bush is very contrite isn’t really surprising, as he really does believe that everything he does is dictated by God, and the fact that he was leading the Mass could represent how he’s leading the country and how he’s a figurehead for the religious fanatics who support his presidency. It could also mean that more people are looking to the modern varieties of religion for answers, and Bush and consumerism seem to be tied to it all.
Or you just ate something weird

In response to that I like David Lynch’s quotes:

I often have dreams of bookstores that have been rummaged through, that are going out of business. But I also dream of libraries with strange and wondrous books I’ve never seen, books in outlandish sizes and unusual bindings. There are often librarians, silently pushing carts around, the carts usually containing large quartos, as of music or Shakespeare plays.

That is a strange and beautiful dream, and just the thing for our Sunday morning. Thank you for telling it.
