Um, Zeno, that was the fashion statement of jeans back in the '60s.
My arch-conservative grandfather once said, seeing me in jeans and a t-shirt "I see you are wearing your non-conformist's uniform".

The message was that the wearer is too cool to care what you think about what he or she is wearing, and the jeans were distressed to make sure you get it, because the wearer very much cared that you thought he or she didn't care. They got very fashionable.

So then the whole designer jeans thing happened, and they they went out of style, so now you can actualy make the original statement by wearing them.

I was at a costumer's convention over the weekend, and now have access to good kilts - I'm trying to decide whether I'm going to wear them myself.

If you want sturdy, wear Dickey's. Blue jeans are so out of style it's an epic farce to rival history itself.

When I see someone in blue jeans, I think "Now there's someone who doesn't give thought 1A to how they appear to the rest of the world." Or else, they do think, but their thoughts are horribly malformed.

Down with dungarees!

I think it's more of a matter of "people who don't think distressing your own jeans has any bearing on whether or not you're living life." Plus, somebody might break a nail.
