Expect Delays!

A public service message: I am in the processing of switching over my hosting and domain registration for this website. This means things will probably be (more) buggy here for a couple days, so please bear with me. But once everything is worked out, there will be a much faster and more reliable new hosting company who has promised me we won’t see any of these speed and other problems that have been plaguing us so much here lately. I will also be re-designing and upgrading this site, as well as launching a totally brand new multi-author site at PopOcculture.com.

So stay tuned, as big things are afoot for the next week or so. I will be posting only intermittently during this time as these issues get sorted out. Thanks for your patience and understanding!

UPDATE!

Somebody asked below how much this will all be costing. Between new hosting fees (with oodles of bandwidth and storage space) and domain transfer fees, etc, the bill is running around $500 - but that should cover me for the next two years, and allow me lots of room to grow this and other sites out. If anybody would like to donate any amount at all to help me cover the costs, click on the “Make a Donation” link at the left side of this and every page of the blog. It will take you to PayPal where you can drop in a few dollars with your credit card. Or, you could get in the habit of clicking on my ads periodically which will also help defray hosting costs. In any case, thanks and you’re also more than welcome to lurk anonymously and just enjoy the conversations we have here.

I wonder how much money it is going to cost for the new server?

Don’t forget to give some attention to your RSS feed. Cnet Newsburst hasn’t been updating you for a few days now. But Google pers. homepage has been, along with the 117 other aggregators I use. (But don’t worry about that newsburst thing. I’m sure it’s no big deal.)

Mainly, if you change the rss url, post the new one so us feed users can resubscribe.

Good call about the RSS feeds Zeno. I might actually convert to using something like Feedburner (so I can keep track of stats more), but we’ll see. Do people like Feedburner?

  4. Zeno Izen Says:

I love feedburner. It gives me some interestingly detailed stats and a nice kit of features like a “smart” rss page that works with a wide slew of aggregators, and republishing scripts and the interface is easy to use. The login page is even easy, which is no small thing nowadays.

The only thing is, I don’t think you can hack your own xml. But I haven’t really tried (like I got time for that, right?) so I could be wrong.

  5. Tim Boucher Says:

Why would I want to hack my own XML?

  6. Zeno Izen Says:

Well, if you want to your RSS feed to do something unusual (say, I don’t know, change the content depending on the aggregator or browser, force your blockquotes to be italicized, include a snipit of sound in your feed, self-taylor for iPod and mobile phone subscribers) you might find you need to change the xml source that “is” your feed. I only understand all this junk in a superficial way, by I do know that it’s something that I wouldn’t mind understanding more, because there’s most likely a lot of untapped potential in the technology.

Some dark suburban bedroom somewhere (in INDIA) our next Bill Gates is looking into it right now.
