News Articles As Tarot

I started doing a new thing over at my tarot blog that some of you might be interested in. In an effort to learn the entire tarot deck more thoroughly, I’m going through and starting with daily looks at different cards. Depending on how much time I find myself with during any particular day, this may range from 0 cards to maybe up to 3 until I finish the deck. I’m just pulling them randomly, in the hopes of culling some useful information for myself for each day.

Anyway the more interesting part, to me, is that I’m starting to try and correlate each card I pull to various news items I pull off Google News and elsewhere. I have only done two quick posts using this method so far. It’s nothing really mind-blowing, but I think it’s kind of a cool technique to get yourself to remember what cards mean better by placing them into a sort of network of associations aside from just the strictly esoteric meanings each one has.

Very loosely inspired by a book I saw at a used bookstore recently by Lon Milo DuQuette called the Book of Ordinary Oracles, the subtitle being: “Use Pocket Change, Popsicle Sticks, a TV Remote, this Book, and More to Predict the Future and Answer Your Questions.” Seems like a pretty cool idea. I also recently bought a pendulum which I’d like to learn more about using. Anybody have any other cool simple methods of divination?

Tim, if you record your results, say every day over a couple weeks, would it be possible for you send me your data? (E.g., date, card, keyword, URLs to which you linked.) It would be interesting to apply some pattern recognition techniques and see if anything emerges. I’ve tried to do something similar in the past, but my professional life intervened and I lost focus.

I had been inspired by the stuff Half Past Human does, but I think he works with very large web searches and fairly sophisticated semantic parsing software. So, I tend to think that nothing all that thrilling will really emerge, but one never knows. On the other hand, if multiple people “of the same mindset” (e.g. several of your readers) did it, then there may be a kind of egregore effect that could be detectable.
