Mel Gibson: Passion of the Terrorist

*UPDATE* - This appears to be a hoax and a very entertaining one! See comments below.

What news to wake up to! Mel Gibson has been arrested and charged with terrorism! Straight from the BBC:

The famous Australian-American actor, director and producer has been arrested at his residence today on terrorism charges. The details are still coming in at this time.

The charges come two days after his run in with Southern California law enforcement. In the previous incident Gibson reportedly failed a breath test. He was charged on suspicion of driving under the influence and freed on bail.

The charges come as little surprise after his anti-Semitic comments such as “Jews are responsible for all the wars in the world.” Using the U.S. Patriot Act the FBI had been following Mel Gibson’s illegal terrorist activities for months. According to sources in the Los Angeles Division of the FBI, Mel Gibson had been funneling money through Australia, where Gibson had lived for many years, into Lebanon and Palestine to help Muslim Extremists fight against Israel. Some of the money went to groups such as Hezbollah and Hamas, no word on if any had been funneled to Al-Qaeda.

When asked what set off the investigation J. Stephen Tidwell, Assistant Director In Charge of the FBI in Los Angeles, made no comment. Internal sources from the FBI says it started when one charity organization went under investigation and funds from Mel Gibson were listed along with other comments regarding him in a positive light.

This story is still being updated as more information becomes available. The FBI Los Angeles division office is releasing very little information at this time.

Three points of expansion in this story:

  1. If Mel Gibson is sending money to Hezbollah, then this is likely money which he has made off his movies. In other words, he has used a movie about Jesus Christ to fund terrorism, and Christians the world over have helped him do it. Congratulations!
  2. And movies of his, such as Braveheart, clearly foreshadow a sympathy towards insurgents who are defending their homeland against an “occupying force.” See my friend’s short post on the subject dating to December of 2005 for more.
  3. This whole thing is the perfect way to turn the crisis happening in Israel and Lebanon into a meta-level story. It takes the heat off what’s actually going on by turning it into a great big controversy that exists in virtual worlds upon worlds, rather than in the strange horrible world of the everyday.

What a freaking time to be alive!

    Two more things:

    - Mel Gibson’s production company was working on a miniseries about the Holocaust for ABC, which has been pulled. Could this have been a pro-holocaust effort? His father apparently denied the whole Holocaust even happened

    - What is this going to do to Gibson’s fan base? Are people going to defend him? Are they going to resist the cognitive dissonance of liking him and his work and say that maybe he was right in doing what he did?

News of this seems to have also buried the fact that Castro just handed over power to his brother because of fading health:

this has *got* to be a hack. the bbclosangeles domain is registered to a “mike hess” in CA through godaddy. something tells me an actual bbc site would be registered under “british broadcasting corporation.”

still interesting, though– good hack, toss in a redirect, but the guy didn’t cover his tracks very well. where’d you get the link?

well on cnn it not only doesn’t have a word about gibsonian terrorism, but they list castro as recovering.

maybe cnn is trying to work out thier spin on this…

It is a very good hoax, I give ‘em credit… all the other links point to the BBC ‘cept for the ‘notes’ one at the bottom…

    Well EXCUUUUUUUUSE me…!

Actually, I was pretty suspicious of it, since when JK originally told me about it, I looked at Google News and Technorati and found mention of Gibson’s drunken rants, but no mention of Hezbollah ties. Should have looked into it then!

Great hoax though - it gave me exactly what I wanted - weird dirt on a public figure - and used a clothing of respectability to pass itself off. Good way to discourage further investigation.

This however, is not a hoax.

    Tim,

First of all wanted to say I love your blog.

I’m going to go out on a limb here and say that Mike appears to be backtracking. Hoaxes are generally supposed to be funny. Regardless of how you feel about Mel Gibson, making false claims that he has links to terrorists, trying to pass them off as authentic, and then trying to make the cause sound noble(”want people not to trust the media so much.”) is not the greatest idea.

Hopefully Mike won’t get too much negative feedback that he is going to regret. I think he at least owes Mr. Gibson an apology on his blog. Just my 2 cents….

[...] Last week I got duped by a fun news hoax which said Mel Gibson had been arrested for terrorism charges. It was interesting to sort of review my own internal reactions as the story turned out to be fake. Part of me wanted to take it down, but part of me also enjoyed the whole thing. Whether it’s real or fake, it cuts to the heart of some deeper issues with the media and how information is disseminated today. So rather than just pretend like this never happened - which a lot of sites seem to be doing - I asked for the hoax author, Mike Hess, to do a very brief interview here to clarify what he was trying to accomplish. I don’t necessarily agree with all of what he said, but see what you think: [...]
