Cultivation
Tomorrow I start a new job with a local upscale organic gardening company. For the first time in several years, I will be working out in the sun and the dirt instead of behind a computer. That’s actually why I set about looking for a job like this to begin with. I am tired of sitting down all day and dealing with things that are completely abstract. I’m very much looking forward to being out in the “real world,” with things that are tangible and all the rest.
The company seems pretty cool too, as they are willing to take me on with no prior experience or background in the subject. They also are very good about encouraging their employees to specialize, and even offer tuition reimbursement for classes related to gardening, etc.
I think it will also be actually really beneficial for my writing to get some space between me and a lot of the concepts that I have been working with. That’s not to say I’m going to stop writing, however. Far from it. But I’m sure my productivity will dip some while I get adjusted to my new schedule and working conditions. To keep regular readers from really event noticing though, I have harvested the huge amount of mental energy that I have had lately and have written something like twenty new posts which will be published automatically from here on out to the end of August.
I have actually gotten way ahead of myself in my writing schedule, coming up with topics and ideas far faster than I’m sure most people would care to observe them. A lot of the things that I am pubishing right now are already about a week old, which has been a sort of weird mental space to get into, where I have actually lapped myself. It’s cool, of course, that I’ve had so much energy to write lately, because it means that I have been tapping into some strong creative energy currents.
I’m actually hoping though that all the weeding and cultivation I will be doing though will actually have that same effect on my internal states: that I will become more grounded and better able to channel my creative energy into fruit-bearing projects, rather than just letting my ideas grow wild and unrefined. In any event, I will continue to post some new (as yet unwritten) things here and there between now and the end of August, to keep things current and to build on the always interesting conversations that develop at this site.
I am also really excited about gaining a new area of knowledge and incorporating it into my existing work here. Towards that end, I have started putting together an Amazon wishlist (should be visible to you, I think) that includes some books to augment my hands-on knowledge with some more “heady” takes on the subject of plants and gardening. If you know any good books (especially on the subject of permaculture) that I ought to add to that list, please let me know. Or if you would like to help me celebrate this new stage of personal “growth” then I would love it if you wanted to buy me one of these books as a little thank you. If not, that’s cool too. I might actually put together a similar list at some point in the future for people who might want to help me fund my further research into the scientific technocratic conspiracy theories that I have been developing. There is a lot more thought to be done in that area and hell, it might even make a good subject for me to write a book of my own about someday…
First things first though, I gotta go out and get my hands dirty. Wish me luck and talk to you soon!

GREAT! I’m glad you got that job. I always wanted a gardening type job. I knew it’d help me learn all this cool crap about plants and be outside while doing it. I’m jealous. Make sure you spread some botany bits my way in the future.

I wish you luck in your new endeavor and I predict it will only prove more of a catalyst for you writing and dreaming than sitting in front of PC ever did.
When I think of you out there in the sun working I find myself tapping that infinite well of happiness inside me and rejoicing for you while taking pleasure at your happiness for you new job.

What a great opportunity to learn a practical, non technical skill and get to know the earth and plants on daily basis. Don’t forget the sunblock. I predict a definite change in the way you perceive the world around you.
Good luck

I ditto everybody who says congratulations. You’ll be like hobbit Samwise Gamgee working with the earth.. Looks like there is an error with the wish list page.

I know this will be an amazingly refreshing experience for you and look forward to the fruits of it shared on these pages. You could take a little tape recorder (dictating machine) and note your on-site thoughts.

Good luck Tim! This sounds really beneficial and even inspiring, in a way. Getting out, working with the land. Wow….I’ve forgotten what it’s like to work out doors. Or even appreciate the world around us. Sometimes I feel “archons” or what have you keep us locked in these cells, behind these walls, because they can harvest our energies more efficiently when we’re not distracted with reality (ie; the beauty and depth of nature, and the wonder and excitement of helping plants grow). But then, they make NOT going outside so damn compelling. Air conditioning, tv, internet, pornography as far as the eye can see.
Those manipulative bastards!

Congratulations and good luck on your new job.
Here’s the Ganesh mantra, an invocation for the “Remover of Obstacles” and a Blessing for new beginnings:
vakratunda mahakaya suryakotee sama prabha
nirvighnam kuru mey deva sarva karyeshu sarvada
It translates (very poorly) as “O Ganesh with the cosmic body and curved trunk, Who has the brilliance of a million suns, allow my Work to be free of all obstacles (to enlightenment), always”
Just repeat it to yourself three or five times one morning (doesn’t matter about the pronunciation)
You’ve also stumbled upon a particularly auspicious/lucky/holy time to start a new job as Ganesh Chaturji (hindu festival for Lord Ganesh) is this Saturday…bodes well…
Be Good
