Podcast 11: Express Yourself

What the hell do we need to “express” ourselves for? Why is that such an important thing in our culture? It doesn’t seem like it goes anywhere except round and round in circles. Am I right? Maybe you’re not ready to agree with me on it, but do it for a few more years and then get back to me. In the meantime, listen to this podcast on the subject of why self-expression may actually be a big fat waste of time.

(For more evidence of the futility of self-expression, check out this new blogging plug-in I just discovered for WordPress which allows you to update the world on the state of your bowel movements.)

I know I can probably add it to the directory somehow, but see if this works for getting it linked in your own computer

Tim, I think you’re correct, it is a trap. I have a hunch though that self-expression as a way to show our uniqueness or whatever is shifting…online at least, it is being used as a way to connect with others…the similarities are becoming more and more apparent to people. need to give that more thought…like I said just a gut feeling.

re: our expressions are not ourselves. On the surface, I agree, but what about the Jesus statement, “By their fruits you shall know them”?

It can be tricky, esp if your playing around with mediums typically used for very personal modes of expression, how people interpret them. an obvious example is the whole lonelygirl thing…

I dont know! What about it? I don’t think he’s talking about “self-expression” there. He’s not talking about painting a picture of making a thoughtful blog post. He seems to me to be talking about social action, about being morally upright, having the healing touch, etc…

“By their fruits you will know them” Is about assessing people’s character based on their actions, not on who or what they claim to be. Are they kind and loving because they act kind and loving, or do they say one thing and do another.

Even then they are still not their actions, they are the creators of thos expressions.

About letting go of your identiy, or what our personality has been molded into through social conditioning. The toltecs called it personal history. It’s a good portion of what the self mastery audio program is about on my site.

Yes, and I believe it is a major portion of what Jesus’ teachings are as well: hate your father and mother, he brings the sword, take up your cross, etc!

Okay, that just clicked the first Don Juan book for me, when Don Juan is talking about how he has no personal history, how he is essentially no one…
