Very interesting. Anyone have information on how to judge just how long to hold someone under without actually drowning them? Anyone want to try it and report back? Im not in a good situation for any rituals right now, but I might try it in a few months.

Cool beans...the mithraic rite is covered by Vermasseren, swomewhere is an online edition...there was a lot of highly symbolic ritual (some will sound familiar to you) and some was very similar to a rebirthing ritual. At eleusis there was just an onslaught...trance, dancing, ritual plays, drugs...

A really great read would be metamorphoses (apuleius), which is describes an initiation into the cult of Isis (well, the outcome, in any case)

Oh, absoolutely...have you read about the ordeals at eleusis, or what the Mithraic initiated endured? When they said "born again," they really meant it!
