[...] In a recent interview here on Pop Occulture, Douglas Rushkoff warned wankers everywhere, “that the image you’re looking at while you masturbate is of a grossly distorted image of a person.” But I’ve been wondering lately: what happens if you suddenly realize the person you’re having sex with is actually a robot? I can’t say that this has happened to me (yet!) but reading Philip K. Dick’s excellent Martian Time-Slip has got me thinking (even moreso) about the subject of automatons and artificial intelligences. Speaking of which, I’m guessing a lot of long-time readers of this site are still confused as to what the hell has gotten into me these past few weeks with regards to all this stuff. Well let me just tell it to you straight without making things more confusing: [...]

[...] The other avenue this opens up culturally has to do with the idea of designing things intelligently. That is, designing and re-designing reality (a theme popular with Rushkoff). This will become the primary theme for the rest of our lives, in case you’re not aware. They call it “augmented” or “mixed reality” depending on what regional market you fall into. Fear not though, as both those words will be replaced by new words once people can wrap their minds around the changes that will suddenly befall them because of it. I feel like I need to warn people that within maybe three-five years, you’re not going to know what’s what anymore in reality. But when I really think that through, I realize most of us really already don’t know what’s what, so what will be the difference? The difference will be that the lies will be emboldened by their physicallity. [...]

Nice.

One thing springs to mind. Ever noticed how 'design' can mean the same as 'intent'?
