Every once in a while I take a break from heavy metal to enjoy the James Brown best-of CD my friend turned me onto. I long ago decided to call James Brown honorary metal. Also, The Big Lebowski is like my favorite movie. I used to watch it over and over with my late father -- with whom I also used to joke around Christmastime that we were celebrating the birth of the sun god Mithra, which ticked off my mom. For some reason, I have equated Sol Invictus with my father, in that he reminds me of an unreformed Emperor Constantine. About the only ideological thing we agreed on was the rejection of organized religion.

happy new year ! It also seems to me more & more there are perennial truths pointing to an objective base. This trumps the subjective notion that "truth" is relative and changing.

The idea of constant change and 'emotional highs and lows' arises from the ego-controlled small-self experience, where the physical body is allowed to shape one's identity - the common experience we are all burdened with ...

I like that "don't believe - be alive."

This sneaks up behind the apparent ego reality and slips into the clear and quiet core of life where the large-self lives. Vacilating emotional love gives way to a spiritual love.

I could be completely mistaken in this, but it's where folks wiser than me have offered direction ... in words that go beyond where words no longer have distinction, but collapse into a single eternal word which contains all meaning.

But this is the treasure of great value, and certainly worth continued exploration. Here's to a new year of discovery!

Becuase the truth was only “true” when you saw it, and now that time has moved, it is no longer true.

No, that's like saying a tree stops being a tree when its leaves fall off...

The emotional highs and lows don't come from the patterns.

It is a compelling pastime for sure.

I can see in myself though that it leads to emotional highs when the patterns come together, and emptional lows when we cant seem to make any sense of the patterns. Its kind of an addiction and control things all wrapped up in one.
Spiritual people all seem to go through these peaks and valleys of experience, of intense pattern matching and peak experience followed by the disolution of the vision when the patterns dont seem to match anymore and a spiritual "low".
... and why dont the patterns match anymore?

Becuase the truth was only "true" when you saw it, and now that time has moved, it is no longer true.

* The truth is personel at best. - Everyone lives their own truth

* The truth is a moving target. - The truth is always changing

I actually completely believe in an objective truth, to be totally honest! And I don't see what I've written here as being that, but it is a compelling pasttime to spin these patterns whatever they are

Neat post. Makes me wonder why I too thought about James Brown and the moon all at once this week. You seemed to distill something out of the aether that I only got a whiff of. On your idea of meaning as coincidence, might I suggest Arthur Koestler's _The Roots of Coincidence_ (which, has, coincidentally, been sitting by my desk for a while) if you haven't already run across it. He talks about the "perversity of physics" -- and if James Brown dancing wasn't a perversion of physics, it don't know what is.

Great Post Tim,

Long time podcast listener and site reader thought I would de-lurk and share my thoughts.
This post has got me thinking about a few things that I have written in my insight journal over the past week. I have been meditating on the nature of truth and personal reality tunnels. Here is what I have come up with

* The truth is personel at best. - Everyone lives their own truth

* The truth is a moving target. - The truth is always changing

* Everything is a connection if you look at it in the right light.

It also relates to another thought I have had lately. The only value things have in the world is the value that you place on them. Nothing in this world has any predetermined intrinsic meaning or value. The meaning of life may be as simple as find which of those connections have value to you. It may be a universal spirit, it may be family, it may be a certain political view.

The fun in life may not be finding the ultimate truth, it may be to just enjoy weaving all of the disparate and interesting threads of experience and "meaning" that come our way into an enjoyable story.

I also had a dream last night in which it was revealed that Paris Hilton would make an all-nude appearance during the coming year at a fashion show...

This is also linked from JK's link above, apparently Britney started taking clothes off again:

Her latest antics have also sparked outrage among one of her most loyal fan bases. Website www.worldofbritney.com has announced it will shut down in January because 'Britney keeps losing her identity and credibility'.

The founder of the website added: "I believe Britney is unfortunately done (for me at least). No matter what anyone thinks or how they may disagree, it's very hard to maintain the respect needed to keep things going."

More Three Kings stuff please! When I go to JK's link the first thing I see is George Clooney! You're on to something here but I don't know what. My understanding is that one of the Kings has always been depicted as being Black. This is dating from a time in European culture when few people travelled to or from Europe. There is a history of highly revered Black Madonnas throughout Eupore as well. The Three Kings figure into the mythology of Eastern Stars (female Masons) as well but I'm not an Eastern Star so I'm not well versed in this myth and I don't want to put words into other people's mouths.

Nice interweaving of the JB myth with ancient myths.

I was always fascinated with JB's stage performances, especially when he pretended that he needed to be taken off-stage while Bobby Byrd wrapped him in a cape... only to regain strength and rush back to the mic as if his life depended upon it, causing his fans to lose their minds in the process.

The Funky Resurrection, anyone?

btw: Happy New Year
