Well, actually 'objectivity' is a really crap word for whatever that is but I don't really have anything better. Except that 'objectivity' needs replacing with whatever that is. A fifth element kinda thingy, a hidden quintessence.

Objectivity just needs redefining.

There is a thing to be observed - it just happens to contain everything including the observers.

Pirsig somewhere has an image of a figure sitting sorting sand into two piles.

I have an image in my head of a mandala, four quadrants, four elements...

There's me
and there's the thing I'm looking at across from me
and there's all the other things around and about
and there's a space in which this is happening

I observe dispassionately
and I empathise
and I am changed by the observation
and I can change the observed

and all this occurs simultaneously, like a candle burning wax to liquid to vapour to flame

and there's a place I must stand to see all this going on

and that is objectivity.

> Don’t try to be objective.

That's one of those negative commands, darn you! :-) A wise man once told me the brain cannot process 'should' either.

Well, hey. Objectivity has become one of the central conceits of science. This exclusive focus is of course complete tosh and needs a good kicking.

Objective = intent = design?

Maybe I do need to go stare at some ivory towers for a while.

*

I'm reminded of Pirsig's take on evolution: it's not moving /towards/ anything so much as /away/ from something.

Find out what the objective of reality is. Don't try to be objective. Two different things.

Glad to see you incorporate that Osho article in there (tricky as he was). It's thought provoking stuff.

I dug the intro section of this latest post as the punchline seemed to come with that "Non Habit Forming" pharmaceutical video later in the post. Set up and zing.

Good stuff.

Alistair: How'd your second date go with the charming church lady?

Peace, all

I feel a need to reply to your thoughts in the comments in the previous thread.

First... objective reality... hmm. Maybe 'objective ineffable reality' - in that it's objective but that doesn't necessarily mean it can be put into words. The best we can do is point out the landmarks.

Now this one reality necessarily contains all the observers... which segues nicely into that famous poem by John Donne about no man being an island.

Perhaps there are many observers because one observer couldn't comprehend the whole thing. Apparently the first man required company, so they say...

Now, as for the tendency to carve up reality into little slices with names (in the same way as the universe has many observers): I guess this is inevitable and related to the creation of useful landmarks, and indeed to be celebrated.

Beyond this there's the tendency for a single distorting lens: a common, incomplete perspective. And /that/ rings falsely to me. It's a little slice with a name, like all the others (I call it the Campaign in my own head), but with the purpose of hiding the reality of all the others. It doesn't seem inevitable and it doesn't seem, for want of a better word, any good.

I missed the Slash reference this time, but maybe I need to reread.

Perhaps the angel with the last trumpet will sound if we all honk our car horns at midnight (jerusalem time) this Rosh Hashanah.

"Energize your butthole."

"Why can't you post something useful like Goro Adachi?"

I can't decide which is funnier or more meaningful.

http://deoxy.org/egofalse.htm

The ego is always looking for some trouble. Why? Because if nobody pays attention to you, the ego feels hungry.

It lives on attention.

So even if somebody is fighting and angry with you, that too is good because at least the attention is paid. If somebody loves, it is okay. If somebody is not loving you, then even anger will be good. At least the attention will come to you. But if nobody is paying any attention to you, nobody thinks that you are somebody important, significant, then how will you feed your ego?

The ego is always looking for some trouble. Why? Because if nobody pays attention to you, the ego feels hungry.

It lives on attention.
