Drivin’ Music??

Hey folks… I am all set to take a ten+ hour road trip by myself in just over two weeks. I thought I would extend an open invite to people to put together collections of music for me to listen to while I am driving. I am going to need “the jams” in order to keep me motivated driving all that distance (although I already have pretty good motivation for making the trip in the first place). Themes ought to include love lost and regained, distances traveled, time honored wisdom of life experience, etc. DO NOT SEND ME SHITTY MUSIC!!!!

Anyway, thought this could be a fun way to “bond.” Now is your chance to indoctrinate me with your favorite reference points (as well as feel my wrath if I don’t appreciate them!!!!). If you have the time and the inclination, please upload your favorite 70-80 minutes worth of driving music in a zip file to SendSpace (should be self-explanatory) so I can download and burn. Be sure to label your mp3 files so that I know what sequential order they ought to go in.

Be sure to include a good title for your album!

Thanking you in advance, your humble web servant…

What do you define as “shitty music”? I tend to find it easier to make recommendations of this sort when I have some idea of what the recommendee doesn’t want.

As far as I can tell everything I don’t like is pretty shitty, and everything I do like is amazing and life affirming and fried gold.

So, here you are, some shit I like:

    Man, you’re brave.

OK, then, off the top of my head - two of the UK’s finest that always run through my head when I’m reading your site:

Queen - the ‘A Kind of Magic’ album - especially One Vision, Don’t Lose Your Head, Gimme the Prize, Princes of the Universe. Try and stay below the legal speed limit ;-D

    ELO - ‘Zoom’ album

Yes! That’s exactly my point. Thank you! Speedbird, if you have any of those, do upload or put together a best of.

Cool! This is so super fun! Plus everyone else can grab everybody else’s recommendations as well!

Maybe we should set up a closed invite-only Pop Occulture reference-point sharing bittorrent group at some point. Does anybody have experience with that & want to set it up?

  9. Tim Boucher Says:

    OH ALSO!

Has anybody put together any videos on YouTube related to all this shit yet? I think I just found one that somebody made (I searched for “smarticles”). It is very strange!

What part of the country are you in? What parts will you be travelling through?

Mountains? Coast? Desert? Prairie? It’s always made a difference in what I’m inclined to listen to.

  11. Tim Boucher Says:

Great question! I will be driving from Seattle down to Humboldt County in California, through the redwoods and along the coast, etc

Yep, till I get to Grant’s Pass or whatever. Will probably take longer than 10 hours by myself though, but we’ll see!

I’m going to try not to listen to these albums before I go on my trip, although I don’t know if I will be able to hold out that long though…

It’s really weird looking through these how many songs I *really* like are included here. That’s totally what I’m talking about with sharing reference points. Hell yeah!

I mean, there’s actually a song on here (by a different artist, but still) that I’ve actually listened to today on my own…

Haha! I always like drivin’ outta town music to put me in the frame of magical possibilities - sweet, organic and creative yearning.
These days I’d pick My Morning Jacket & The Arcade Fire
past favs are Hendrix, Beatles, Queen, Zep, Yes

When returning, or entering into urban areas, the heavier/industrial/electronic the better.
These days it would be Ladytron , because I believe they speak to our age …
pasy favs include Killing Joke and Prodigy

    Bon Voyage!

If you like psychodelic, ambient, jazzy-trip-hopish funk then check out Amorphous Androgynous’ “Alice In Ultraland”. Probably one of the best albums I’ve heard in a long time.

check out Sheryar Hyatt. he’s a boy from pakistan (suprised?) who makes jaw dropping beautiful music.

    check this out:
