In this hermetic side of alchemy, the “philosopher’s stone”, supposed to to be the most tangible and dense crystalization or condensation of a subtle substance, became a metaphor for an inner potential of the spirit and reason to evolve from a lower state of imperfection and vice (symbolized by the base metals) to a higher state of enlightenment and perfection (symbolized by gold). In this view, spiritual elevation, the transmutation of metals, and the purification and rejuvenation of the body were seen to be manifestations of the same concept.

Before placing the crystal in the lightsaber, the Jedi or Sith must imbue them with the Force. To do this, the Force-user must meditate on the crystals for many days. Luke Skywalker meditated on his crystals in Ben Kenobi’s home for many days with only R2-D2 to keep him company. While the Jedi were happy to use commercially available crystals, Palpatine made Darth Maul use a special furnace to make his own crystals. It took days for him to make the four crystals needed for his double-bladed lightsaber without sleep. Creating them required intense concentration as he had to use the Force to make them the proper shape and free of impurities. He was particularly proud of this achievement and believed it to be an example of the Sith’s superiority over the Jedi. However, it is significant that Luke Skywalker also used a special furnace he found in Obi-Wan Kenobi’s home to prepare his crystal.

And now a s/word from our sponsors.
Said to live for 500 or 1461 years (depending on the source), the phoenix is a bird with beautiful gold and red plumage. At the end of its life-cycle the phoenix builds itself a nest of cinnamon twigs that it then ignites; both nest and bird burn fiercely and are reduced to ashes, from which a new, young phoenix arises. The new phoenix embalms the ashes of the old phoenix in an egg made of myrrh and deposits it in the Egyptian city of Heliopolis (”the city of the sun” in Greek). The bird was also said to regenerate when hurt or wounded by a foe, thus being almost immortal and invincible — a symbol of fire and divinity. Tears from a phoenix can heal wounds.

Fill this part in later with clever made-up sounding computer words and shit…
On December 27, probably 1673, the feast of St. John, Margaret Mary reported that Jesus permitted her, as He had formerly allowed St. Gertrude, to rest her head upon His Heart, and then disclosed to her the wonders of His love, telling her that He desired to make them known to all mankind and to diffuse the treasures of His goodness, and that He had chosen her for this work.
And this too…

You get the idea at this point, so yeah…
The whole aim of this devotion is to unite mankind to God through Mary’s heart, and this process involves the ideas of consecration and reparation. A person is consecrated to Mary’s Immaculate Heart as a way of being completely devoted to God. This involves a total gift of self, something only ultimately possible with reference to God; but Mary is our intermediary in this process of consecration.
Right… stuff!

to somewhat follow-up on your earlier request for youtube entries, i’ve completed my first youtube video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wr2sQe2MQ1U ! while this isn’t that close at all to what you asked for, it is the virgin mary which connects us
this started as a mere vehicle for me to learn After Effects, but as I got more and more familiar with the medium, subtle ideas started trickling through of ways to mix up the media and connect the dots in different ways. the video i had planned as my “first” video will be next, and is influenced by your “identity” series of posts from a few months back. quite the fun new realm of exploration…

Beautiful post. I keep thinking “what a juicy red, red post”. Any insights anybody has on The Phoenix would be appreciated. I had a vision of one as a child and I ended up convinced that the Sun was crashing into the Earth. After I had picked out the design for a tattoo the artist told me that it was a Phoenix from Conan the Barbarian’s shield in the Conan cartoon but I had never seen the cartoon.

Man, I want a lightsaber.

Then build one - that’s the whole point of this post. You’ll need a crystal first though! It’s all part of becoming a Jedi: building the light saber, turning it on, and mastering it.

I never knew that much went into the light saber. I just figured it was technological, like anyone could buy one and use it. Cool.

This is from p’s Steiner link on the previous post. It’s from a chapter titled “Sleep and Death”.

I know exactly what he’s talking about and experienced this recently: the reason we can’t “measure” the human soul is that we are the juncture of null spaces interacting with each other.
More to say on that but this picture does it better

Cool stuff. As I was reading the section on the fire and phoenix, the story of Joan of Arc kept coming to mind especially an old picture I saw as a kid:
