My Skills Inventory

Consider the following my deposit into the skills bank.

Summary

I am smart. I talk good too. Smiling is my favorite. I am passionate about self-mastery, strategy, effective communication and right action.

Detailed Version

  1. I know how to tell the truth.
  2. I know a little bit about boxing and am not afraid to get punched in the face.
  3. I can plant trees, garden and landscape. I know a little bit about permaculture and herbal medicine and would like to know more.
  4. I have made a room full of dogs sit at the same time. I worked at a dog daycare place and have a strong intuitive grasp of pack dynamics, animal behavior and communication (I am not quite yet at the level of “pet psychic” or “horse whisperer” however).
  5. I try to act compassionately.
  6. I lecture, train, teach and design curriculums. Or I used to anyway, and I would like to do it again. I helped design and deliver a 14-week (40 hours a week) curriculum to re-train unemployed adults to become dynamic web application programmers.
  7. I build websites. I have a deep love of and understanding of technology, but I am choosy about what clients and projects I am willing to take on. I am at this point more interested in building experiences though, as opposed to just simple websites.
  8. I believe in Beauty.
  9. I know how to design, paint, build and restore stained glass windows, thanks to my brother who is a much better artist and craftsman than I’ll ever be.
  10. I breathe WordPress. This should probably go under “builds websites”, but hey. WordPress to me isn’t just about technology, but is a beautiful expression of technology in service to humanity (and community), instead of vice versa. To me, WordPress and Wikipedia are my “dream team” for the formation of a future political party that finally saves the world. I am being rhetorical, but I also still mean it.
  11. I have natural abilities at energy healing and massage and can sometimes diagnose physical problems by touching someone and almost “seeing holographically” inside their body. I need to learn more about all this though.
  12. I am “wicked good” at Photoshop (although I don’t know as much about print applications as I do about web). Illustrator and I are getting to be friends. I have a strong understanding of visual communication and how to make an impact, if not necessarily the most refined design sense or technical skills.
  13. My three ball juggling is getting pretty awesome and my four ball skills are progressing adequately. My Baoding method will one day be sublime.
  14. I can draw, paint and play the guitar, all pretty well. I went to art school for painting but dropped out because I thought I was better than it. I have written and recorded a lot of music, but I’m not especially great at either. I’m better at improvising. Some of what I wrote really had heart though.
  15. I know how to shake my ass on the dance floor and not be self-conscious about it. I love seeing other people having a good time and am learning how to facilitate that as I become less self-absorbed as a person. I also know how to cut through a crowded room quickly.
  16. I have zero tolerance for bullshit - goes along with the whole telling the truth thing. Corollary to that: I am a great listener, but I will always interrupt you if you start bullshitting me.
  17. I am beginning to really understand the game of chess and getting halfway decent at it. I am always up for a game of chess - or a few games of pool for that matter. My pool games and chess games are neck and neck at this point. One teaches me about the other, and each about life. (It’s all about positioning, and playing the board, not sides.)
  18. I adore thinking big. I am learning how to boil things down to their essence, how to communicate them, and how to take action on them - finally; it has been a long road. (I’m also really good with symbols: a natural propagandist, in a way but I have a spiritual commitment to using my powers only for good. I’m also a 3rd circuit savant)
  19. I am a student of the moment. Class is always in session. Everyone is a teacher. There are no grades, only graduations. (Truth, I think, is dedication to the beauty and perfection of each moment.)

In a world of dogmatic specialists, it’s the generalist who ends up running the show.

Is the CEO a better accountant than the CPA? Is Steve Jobs a better programmer than the iTunes VP of Engineering? No, but he has a broad range of skills and sees the unseen interconnectedness. As technology becomes a commodity with the democratization of information, it’s the big-picture generalists who will predict, innovate, and rise to power fastest. There is a reason military “generals” are called such.

[...] Putting together my skills inventory was a very worthwhile project. It forced me to examine not just who I am and what makes me up, but of what value I can be to other people. It’s a very small wedge to drive into your thinking, but it is a very important one. A life lived in loneliness leads to dying alone. Humans are not just social animals, but for the fulfillment of our very souls we require other people to serve, to balance us out, to enlighten us and to love us. [...]

[...] Skills inventories are awesome! I have seen about a half a dozen at this point and they are all really inspiring and in some cases revealing. They offer windows of insight into people as characters. Having so much of our communication mediated through the internet is - let’s face it - weird! A skills inventory is a nice way to show people what you’re all about, what value you add to the world - of what service you can be to your fellow man. Civic duty almost, but beyond that: your responsibility to other God-realized beings, you could think of it as. [...]
