AirPress Failure: Problems
Here’s the post-game show:
I tried out AirPress.org, which is a “smart” but overall “sucky” attempt by probably but not definitely Adobe under-cover marketing for a new line of products gears towards bloggers and the new wave of casual media “prosumers.”
Or it is what it seems to be. Either way, I like where it’s going. Adobe should be looking at people like me, because we are the power users. I spend ALL my time uploading content to the web, entertaining myself and a significant audience *and* making money as a nouveau business model at the same time. And here I am fucking cobbling together rocks and sticks to simply try and upload a couple photos, some text and a YouTube video, and the product doesn’t even work?
Come on people! When’s the last time we saw a full-fledged software innovation. I’m not talking about some zippy bullshit with Vista or Mac or Ubuntu. I’m talking real interface innovations, real conceptual breakthroughs with how computers are used and thought about? We are long overdue. Why is the internet full of JPEG’s and GIF’s and MP3’s and file formats that sucked at the time and suck even worse now?
If it’s not a conspiracy then it’s a huge waste of potential dollars. Where are all the money-hungry businessmen with clear heads when we need them?
What I like about AirPress anyway, is that it is a step in the right direction. Still fucking klunky and weird and made my head hurt to use it though. Don’t make the text image based or whatever the hell that is, the thing where you blend it instead of just showing the straight pixels like in a web browser. Browsers are way better for that reason.
Anyway, specific problems with AirPress:
- Failed to import my blog the first time.
- Made me nervous I was going to accidentally erase my database and web existence in one fell swoop. But I did it anyway, because the lure of solving all my web content problems was so great… and so unfulfilled.
- Then I closed it and opened it and had two copies of my blog imported, only one of which had posts in it.
- Problems from the get-go every step of the way do not make for a good user experience.
- What’s with the goofy shape of the edge of the interface? It makes for a confusing transition from browser window to AirPress window. That frameshift fucks my mind up and breaks my concentration. I think you’re going to want to shoot for more of a GreaseMonkey script that skins your WordPress install so as to integrate it more smoothly and closely with not just your desktop (because that’s a dead or dying metaphor) but the photos and music that “live” on your computer (in this garden, as opposed to out in the wild).
- Speaking of out in the wild - YouTube, have you ever heard of it? WTF? No support for online video sources whatsoever - why, because Adobe doesn’t own YouTube? Allow us not to mutually shit ourselves here.
- What happened to all the precious categories I selected?
- Shit is frozen on my computer and won’t close. The memory use of this is astronomical and it didn’t even FTP my one photo. Are you joking? I know this is “just beta” but step it up a notch and don’t insult your audience/consumers!
Okay, hopefully that gives you some specifics. Let me know if you need more.

Oh, and if the code you generate and plug into my database looks like this now, then you’re already doomed to fail. I’d much rather handcode and keep things nice and lean than have this sloppy bullshit in there! It’s a matter of integrity. Certain things have to matter!
